QR Codes are currently the hottest marketing trend in Japan, and some Aussies may have seen a QR Code but not known what it is – so we are going to give you an insight into QR Codes, and how they can benefit your business.

A QR Code is defined as a matrix code (or two dimension bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-wave way back in 1994. The ‘QR’ is derived from ‘Quick Response’  as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. (Wikipedia)

QR codes are designed to direct customers to an immediate decision, whether it is to purchase a brand or to facilitate information. Among other things QR Codes make your average print brochure or billboard an immediate and interactive media.

So how do QR Codes work?

Easy! Simply download an a QR Decoding Application to your mobile phone – there are many available, including a number of free options, I have an iPhone and have downloaded QuickMark.

Once you have the QR Decoder on your phone, you simply activate the decoder and point the phone at the QR code – whether the code is on a computer screen or billboard – and let your phone instantly decode the message.

QR Codes can direct a customer to a website, provide a specific message, direct a customer to a contact number, or SMS, as well  as other things, even provide you with a Google map location.

And because QR Codes are easy and cost nothing to generate, you can create a QR Code tailored for each piece of marketing collateral. For example, if you are a real estate agent, you could place a QR Code on for sale signs, flyers or other signage, which contains the contact details of an agent or directs the customer to a specific landing page.

And if you are a travel agent you may wish to generate a QR Code which directs customers to SMS you, so you can contact them with regard to a specific travel deal.
